Subliminal

Subliminal festival

Subliminal is Foton's very own festival - a multi-sensory illusion machine. Subliminal explores the boundaries of perception. The festival's main theme is the border between the observable and the non-observable - the result is a parallel world based on illusions and altered perceptions. This parallel world is created through music, video, dance, film, lectures, theater, performance art, installations and scientific experiments.

A selection of works presented at the first edition of Subliminal:

  • musicians tamper with the sounds of the ebola virus, ghosts and the F-17 Stealth bomber
  • video artists work with 360 degrees surround image from which there is no escape
  • bodies of dancers seem to disintegrate into deconstructed fragments;
  • performance artists fight gravity and transform their body into an object
  • visitors' physical reactions to sounds and images are scientifically recorded and analysed, as part of the development of a fear machine
  • specialists discuss the use of media manipulation, of mimicry and of pseudo-science related to electronic voice phenomena.

The first edition of Subliminal was presented at the Beursschouwburg, Brussels, Belgium, January 2005. You will find a detailed overview of the festival on the Subliminal website.

We are currently looking out for new partners to organise a second edition. Please get in touch if you are interested in collaborating with us.
